How Army Job Selection Works
When you enlist in the Army, you and your recruiter negotiate a job contract called a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). The MOS you can get depends on two things: your ASVAB line scores and the Army's current needs (availability).
The Army uses 10 composite line scores — GT, ST, EL, MM, OF, CO, FA, GM, SC, CL — calculated from different ASVAB subtest combinations. Each MOS requires a minimum score in one or more of these composites.
The most important composite for most jobs is GT (General Technical) = VE + AR, where VE = Word Knowledge + Paragraph Comprehension. Most competitive Army jobs require GT 100–112.

How to Read an MOS Score Requirement
When you see "ST 101" for a job, it means your Skilled Technical composite score must be at least 101. The ST composite is calculated as:
ST = GS + VE + MK + MC
To improve your ST score, focus on General Science (GS), vocabulary (WK + PC for VE), Math Knowledge (MK), and Mechanical Comprehension (MC). See our line scores guide for formulas for every composite.
What If You Don't Hit the Score?
If your line scores don't meet a specific MOS requirement, you have two options:
- Retake the ASVAB — you can retest after 1 month, then again after 1 more month, then every 6 months. With focused prep, most people can raise target composites by 10–20 points.
- Choose a different MOS — use the Army jobs list to find all jobs you currently qualify for, then pick the best fit.
