Can Anyone Join Special Forces?
Special operations units are among the most demanding and selective in the world — and ASVAB scores are just one of many requirements. But you can't get to selection without first meeting the score minimums. This guide covers what each branch requires, what the scores actually test, and how to prepare.
Important note: ASVAB scores are the entry ticket. Passing the ASVAB doesn't guarantee entry into SOCOM — selection courses (SFAS, BUD/S, INDOC, etc.) are where most candidates are eliminated.
Army Special Forces (18X — Green Berets)
The Army's Special Forces is one of the most academically demanding SOCOM routes:
- GT score: 110 minimum
- CO score: 100 minimum
- AFQT 50+ (standard Army enlistment requirement)
- Additional: SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape) training, SFAS (Special Forces Assessment and Selection)
GT 110 is a high bar — it places you at the top third of Army enlistees. GT = VE + AR. Focus on vocabulary (WK + PC) and arithmetic reasoning to push your GT score up.
Army Rangers (11X with Ranger Option)
- GT score: 105 minimum (some sources cite 110 for certain MOS feeding into Ranger units)
- Physical requirements: pass the Ranger Physical Assessment (RPA)
- Ranger School is open to soldiers after initial enlistment; Ranger Regiment requires additional assessment (RAP week / RASP)
Army Civil Affairs / Psychological Operations
- 37F (PSYOP): GT 107
- 38B (Civil Affairs): GT 107, ST 100
- Both are supported by SWCS (Special Warfare Center and School)
Navy SEALs (Special Warfare Operator, SO)
The Navy doesn't use traditional line scores for SEAL qualification. Instead, there's a specialized minimum:
- Option A: GS + MC + EI ≥ 165
- Option B: VE + MK + MC + CS ≥ 220
- AFQT 50+
- Additional: BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL) — one of the highest dropout rates in the military (~75%+)
- The PST (Physical Screening Test) must be passed before selection: 500 yard swim under 12:30, 50 push-ups, 50 sit-ups, 10 pull-ups, 1.5 mile run under 11:00
Navy SWCC (Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewman)
- Option A: AR + MC + GS ≥ 165
- Option B: VE + MK + MC + CS ≥ 220
- Similar physical standards to SEALs
Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD)
- AR + VE ≥ 109
- MC ≥ 51
- AFQT 65+
- Diving qualified; EOD school is 41 weeks
Air Force Special Warfare
Pararescue (PJ — 1T2X1)
- General: 44
- Mechanical: 47
- Combat dive, freefall, and emergency medical qualified
- PAST (Physical Ability and Stamina Test) must be passed
Combat Control (CCT — 1C2X1)
- General: 44
- Electronic: 33
- Mechanical: 47
- FAA Air Traffic Control certified; combat dive and freefall qualified
Special Reconnaissance (SR — 1Z4X1)
- General: 44
- Mechanical: 47
Tactical Air Control Party (TACP — 1C4X1)
- General: 49
- Directs close air support; often embedded with Army units
Marine Raiders (MARSOC — Critical Skills Operator)
- GT score: 105 minimum
- MOS 0372 (CSO) — no direct enlistment; must be an established Marine with 2+ years service first
- ITC (Individual Training Course) has ~50% attrition rate
Marine Reconnaissance (0321)
- GT: 105
- Must complete Basic Recon Course after infantry training
What Score Should You Actually Target?
Don't aim for the minimums. Here's why:
- Meeting the minimum doesn't guarantee a slot. Recruiters often prioritize candidates with scores well above minimums when slots are competitive.
- Higher scores demonstrate cognitive ability — exactly what selection cadres look for in potential special operators.
- Score gaps can eliminate you before selection. If you're 2 GT points below the requirement, you can't even begin the pipeline.
A realistic target for any SOCOM pipeline: GT 115+ for Army paths, AFQT 65+ across the board. This gives you margin, demonstrates ability, and keeps all options open.
Study Priorities for Special Forces Paths
For GT-heavy requirements (Army SF, Rangers, PSYOP):
- Drill Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension — they double-count in AFQT and directly raise GT
- Master Arithmetic Reasoning word problems — the other half of GT
For Navy SEAL/SWCC paths:
- Prioritize GS + MC + EI (Option A composite)
- Focus on Mechanical Comprehension — gears, levers, pulleys — and Electronics Information
